Maynards

Maynards, Zodiac’s parent company, was and still is, renowned worldwide for its “WINE GUMS”

The company had its origins in Stoke Newington, London, where Charles Riley Maynard (CR as we was always known) owned a sweet shop. With his wife Sarah Anne and brother Tom they made sweets in a candy kitchen at the rear. This would have been in the mid to late 1880s, though there is a reference on the 1881 census that he was a confectioner living at 96 Balls Pond Road, Islington, with his parents and brother Tom. CR was married in 1882.

By 1896 when Maynards became a limited company, there were 65 shops and six small factories.

You can read more about the history of this company here. 50Mb file This was published as a part-work in several editions of the Maynards company newsletter. I have converted the pages to PDF which can be read by most computers (please note: 50Mb file). The story is incomplete as Maynards were taken over in 1986 before the remaining chapters were published.
